It flew across the ceiling and screeched. The dark shadow found pregnant Min-Shi’s room, seeping through the walls and under her blanket. It took her body, jolting her awake. She convulsed, desperately clawing at herself as the black shadowy smoke took control, causing her hands to blacken and her fingernails to break off.

Frost rolls along the narrow aisle with the shadow, while Kian dances around them, slamming into the cell bars and trying to find a good opening to attack. I lope toward them, my gaze riveted to the shadow undulating beneath Frost’s bulk. His fur and smoky magic blend in with the shadow being, even with the orange glow of the wood stove lighting up the room. It’s a harsh reminder of who we are. What we’re made of.
