I could feel it, and when he tilted his head, baring his teeth in a cruel sneer, his eyes glinting, Hunter closed his eyes, exhaling. "We’re going to split up." He breathed. "What?" I hissed. "That’s Xenara Khasorin, the third prince of the empire. We’ve met before and he’s fucking lethal." Hunter explained quietly, frowning deeply. "Why am I not fucking surprised?" Theon murmured. "You two carry on, tonight it’s just him and I…" I knew splitting up wasn’t a good idea, but if Hunter was saying to do so…

I screamed, breaking cover and running toward them. I found them in a small clearing. The Hunter was lying on his back. He was dressed in grey tactical camouflage, his face covered by a sleek, full-face mask with glowing green lenses. A high-tech compound bow lay in the dirt nearby. Ashren was straddling him, his good hand clamped around the Hunter’s throat, his other hand raised, claws extended, ready to rip the mask off. "Give me one reason not to open your jugular," Ashren snarled.

"The Hunting is about to start. Shall we?" Every Pack had gathered by the time Harrison took the central platform. The clearing was ringed with spectators — warriors in hunting gear, civilians on the observation benches, representatives from a dozen allied Packs standing in loose formation. Harrison raised his voice. The crowd fell quiet. "Today, we don't just celebrate the hunt. We celebrate a new era." He reached for Sasha's hand. She climbed up beside him, chin high, shoulders squared. "I am proud to announce my union with Sasha — daughter of Alpha Theron of the Silvercrest Pack. The new Selene-Blade. The strongest female warrior alive."

Then static. Then the hunter speaks again, his voice clipped. “He has gone dark, sir. Gone cold. Not even our strongest scryers can detect his aura anymore. He is, ahem, well protected.” The screen flickers with internal noise as Xavier straightens in his chair, rage simmering in his jaw. “Protected by what?” he growls. The hunter hesitates. “We don’t know.” “Useless,” Xavier snarls, slamming his fist onto the marble table. “Years of tracking. Funds. Blood. All for nothing?!” The hunter speaks again, clearly shaken. “There’s… something else.” Xavier’s growl deepens.

Xavier came as well, gesturing to their men to stand alert at the moment while contemplating the destructive sight. Zayne’s head snapped toward them, a predatory stare enough to make Kieran slow his steps, feeling the bloodlust emitting from him. The man who cared about business deals, flower arrangements, and date nights had been scrubbed away, replaced by the Hunter, a machine designed for nothing but termination. “It’s not over,” Zayne rasped in a low, infuriated tone, “It can never be over. I was foolish to think it would be.” “She’s not here,” Xavier added.

Untreatable once it passed a certain stage. It described the people who used the blade. I turned back to Xavier. "They're called Shadow Hunters," I said. "They're not wolves. They're an old faction, older than most of the packs on this continent. They don't have sides. They hunt whoever they're paid to hunt, and once they mark a target, the target can't hide. The mark makes them trackable through any ward, any border." I kept my voice level. "Your scouts weren't killed by rogues. They were marked. Probably to send you a message."

I growl out. Fuck this nasty city, fuck the Sect. Dargo Warsunngs will pay dearly for every single fucking transgression he’s impeded me with. This hunter, they’re all alike, I think, as I watch him get dragged to our room. Big, sleek muscles, and more than likely has blond hair and blue eyes. Deadly in their art, but in the end, they all die the same. Xavier opens the door when the newcomers reach the room. Thankfully, they’ve gagged the hunter. I cannot deal with loud caterwauling right now, as Brody would put it.

Dominic’s eyes widened in pain and indignation, “ Alpha Harvey you don’t understand. That girl is part Hunter. She is also a spitting image of her father. He had killed members of my pack before fighting my father. Her dad managed to escape but in order to do so he used a silver sword to cut off my father’s leg. That same day is when I became Alpha. I’ll never forget that face. And this bitch even had the audacity when I confronted her to say that she loved her father and that he was a good man! How could any Hunter be good? But it wasn’t the monster that had my heart stopping in my chest. It was his eyes. “Ronan,” I breathed, barely recognizing the sound of my own voice. The wolf didn’t hesitate. He lunged, his claws slicing through the air as he slammed one of the hunters into the door with a sickening crack. The man crumpled, his body limp, his gun clattering to the floor. “What the fuck is that?” another hunter yelled, his voice cracking with fear as he aimed his weapon at Ronan. Before he could fire, Ronan was on him, pinning him to the wall. The man slumped, lifeless, as Ronan turned to me, his blue eyes blazing.

I nodded to Xavier, he had every right to hate me, and if that made him feel better, then I would take it. I closed my eyes as he raised the knife and waited for him to plunge it deep into my chest.
