It started low, in my chest, and then it rose, high and clean and terrible.
When I screamed, the sound hit like a wall.
Her nails slipped from my throat. She stumbled back as if a physical force had struck her, arms flailing. She hit the dresser, spun, and crashed into the full-length mirror.
Glass shattered around her in glittering, slow rain.
I fell to my knees, hands over my ears, the echo of the scream ringing in my head. The sound left me trembling, empty and shaking, as dust and glass settled on the floor.
