On the other hand, the notion that Ragnar was confirmed to be perfectly alive, searching for her, and that he would kill Caleb filled her with dread. The double doors of the council chamber loomed ahead—polished oak carved with the Kane insignia: a serpent curled around a dagger. The maid stopped short. “This is as far as I go.” Liara nodded, smoothing a hand over her dress, checking her reflection in the mirrored panel to her right. Just a flicker. Her face was composed, her spine straight. The sadness still lingered beneath her ribs, but she buried it deeper, bracing herself in steel and silk. Then she pushed the doors open. The room went quiet. Twelve heads turned. Twelve calculating gazes assessed her like she was a file laid out on the table.

When it finally ended, she rose immediately, gathering her papers like they were shields, and stumbled out without waiting for any confrontation. But I had to see her, so I came up with a reason to. Standing by the door, I took a deep breath and knocked. “Come in,” her voice called from outside. She looked dashing in that navy-blue dress that hugged her skin, and her ponytail sat gracefully on her head. But Liara soon discovered that being a protector was not just about fighting battles and defeating enemies. It was also about being a leader, and about making difficult decisions that affected the lives of many people.

Trying to maintain her composure, she urged Maria to continue. With a mischievous glimmer in her eyes, Maria confessed, "I decided to gift him a company, Sabor Estavez, to win his affections. _Selene's POV_ The next morning, I was already in a bad mood. For days, everyone in the pack had spoken about the same thing. Aria's disappearance had somehow become the center of every conversation. Warriors discussed search routes. Elders discussed possibilities. Servants whispered theories whenever they thought nobody was listening. I was completely tired of it. No matter where I went, somebody always found a way to bring her up. I stood near the large windows of my father's study and watched several warriors crossing the courtyard below. Even now, another search party was preparing to leave.
