I never get tired of that transformation sequence glow. You know the one – the shimmering aura, the cracking bones sound effect, the dramatic camera pan as the character's silhouette morphs. It's pure spectacle, and for a lot of these shows, that visual payoff is half the point. The build-up to getting a new form, the agonizing training or near-death experience required to trigger it, it all serves that moment of visual awe.
But the power shift is what really hooks me. It's rarely just 'now I'm stronger.' It's a complete renegotiation of the character's place in their world. Look at 'Jujutsu Kaisen' – Gojo's power is so absolute it isolates him. Or in older series like 'Inuyasha', the half-demon's struggle for control over his transformation is his entire internal conflict. The new form often comes with a cost, a time limit, or a loss of reason, which keeps the stakes ridiculously high. It's a metaphor for adolescence, for unlocking potential you fear might consume you. The animation sells the wow factor, but the narrative tension around controlling that power is what makes you stay up for 'just one more episode'.
Honestly, the best ones make you feel that unstable thrill right along with the character.
