Then it jerked its massive head back and started shaking it violently from side to side. A low, pained whimper tore out of its throat as it staggered backward, massive shoulders twitching and jerking. Its huge body swayed like it was drunk or in agony. The glowing eyes that had been locked on me started flickering, dimming and brightening like a dying lightbulb. Another whimper ripped out of it, deeper this time, almost like a human groan mixed with a growl. What the fuck…? I stopped screaming. When his hand tangled in my fur, I shifted back, the change faster this time, though no less strange.

I could feel my core temperature dropping, the insidious cold crawling deeper into my body even as I struggled to keep moving. Hypothermia. I'd seen it happen to wolves before who'd gotten caught too far away from the pack on winter hunts. The uncontrollable shaking at first. Then confusion, clumsiness, slurred words. And eventually, the fatal calm as the body began shutting down non-essential processes. I was already past the shivering stage. My feet caught on a roof and I fell down hard, my hands too numb to cushion my fall. Snow filled my mouth, my nostrils, melting against my face like the tears I'd lost the strength to shed long ago.

As she took a few steps to where her Marine family stood, the dog began his ritual to initiate the shift from dog to hound. “Body shake,” Jack said as Teuf shook out his body. “Upward dog,” Gunny said as the dog stretched out his back legs. “Downward dog,” Jill said as he lowered his head between his paws before standing back up. “Head shake,” Doc added as the dog’s head shook. “Shoulder roll,” Celeste completed as Teuf rolled his shoulders before he did his own shift. “I love watching him shift.” Sammi said as clapped her hands excitedly.

The sound of the growl sent chills down Jovie's spine, and she whipped around. In the weak light filtering through the top of the door, she saw the hulking form of a wild dog. Heart pounding, she scrambled back until the cold wall stopped her retreat. With nowhere left to hide, she crouched down, hugging herself tightly, shaking uncontrollably as the wild dog inched closer.

I watched to say something else, but the wolf attached to me started to shake. At first I thought it was trying to tear out my throat, but I realized its jaws released and it was shaking still. I opened my jaws and jerked back, but the wolf just fell to the ground. The shaking grew in intensity, and then it started to foam at the mouth. It reminded me of a dog with rabies, but we couldn’t catch rabies.

She struggled a bit through the tress and rocks but pushed forward eagerly. Dreg slowed down knowing that she wouldn’t be able to keep up with her shorter hinges. Just as she was about to get him, he turned around and jumped her playfully. He growled playfully and nipped at her skin which felt like tickles through her fur.
