He watches me first. “So you actually do readings?” he asks. “I do,” I say. He hesitates, then shrugs. “My mom said you helped one of the kids down the hall feel less freaked out.” I smile faintly. “That sounds like her version of it.” He looks at his hands for a moment, then back at me. “Can you read for me?” he asks, quieter than before. I swallow. “Yes,” I say gently. “If you want.” I shuffle slowly and lay three cards face down between us. When I turn them over, they do not scream with meaning or demand action. They simply speak, quiet and honest.

“The page on the right, read it.” She was quiet as he read the part without any expression on his face. When he was finally, done he looked at her with a smirk on his face and asked, “So, do you care to show me what you have learned? I mean, reading is not just enough, practice helps too.” I see his eyes turning dark and my lips go dry. I lick them sub-consciously and that particular action seems to heighten his excitement. My body starts to react but I shut it down. I still am not ready to do what he is asking.

She takes a seat next to me "What are you doing?" "I'm reading". "How are you doing that? Sorry if I sound rude". I shake my head "No it's not, I understand". I stretch my book a bit forward for her to see. " These are like some sort of dots, is this how you read?". "Yea is like reading with my fingers". She gasps "Thats cool". " I'm happy you think so, most people don't". "I like people who do things in unusual ways it makes them special, I hope that didn't come out the wrong way?".

I watched the delivered status change almost instantly. Read. No typing bubble. No dots. Nothing. I stared at the screen so long my eyes started to burn, willing something to appear, some easy explanation that would make the whole ugly shape of my suspicion collapse back into nothing. A minute passed. I refreshed the app like that would change anything. Five minutes. I set the phone down, picked it back up almost immediately. Me: Hello? Nothing. Me: you read it. I can see that you read it. Still nothing.

I came through the door and Mirela looked up and read my face with the attentiveness of someone who had been working alongside me for two weeks and had learned what my arrival with a tablet and an expression of contained urgency meant. “What have you got?” she said. I placed the decrypted communication in front of her without preamble and watched her read it. She read the first section and her reading pace changed, slowing in the way that reading pace changed when the content was the content you had been trying to reach and you were processing it carefully rather than quickly because you did not want to misread it. She read the second section and looked up at me once, briefly, with the expre
