The message preview read only one line. “Ma’am, you’re going to want to see this.” My breath hitched. Slowly, I unlocked the phone.

He was going to see her when he told me he was going to work. I stay still, looking at the screen while Jude changes the document. He opens a will. I look over my shoulder at Jude and he gives me a small nod. They highlight everything I need to know. “Here, this is the important part,” Jude says, and I nod as I read.

I slam my holo-display down and point at "Mt. Never-Ending" "By doing it," Renee answers. "One-by-one, chapter-by-chapter, and assignment-by-assignment. Now wipe your tears, and your nose, and start reading." Grabbing a different assignment, Renee brings up his own holo-display and starts reading the chapter. Jump and Alodia copying Renee, grab their own assignments and bring up their own holo-display. Sighing, I sniffle, wipe my eyes, and start reading the chapter. "I wonder how Shocker and his team are doing."

He read it. He read it with the particular and specific quality of a man reading something that requires a fraction of a second to process, not because the words were complex but because the specific and particular reality of them needed a moment to become real, to transition from language on a screen to a fact with weight and dimension and the full specific gravity of something that was actually happening. Hargrove was saying something about the Q3 projections. Julian stood up.

This was the part of me that nobody could touch. Rhys read the feature that evening. Sitting on his couch with the magazine open on his lap, reading slowly the way he read everything – deliberately, like the words might rearrange themselves if he went too fast. I sat across from him pretending to check emails and watching his face instead. The way his eyes moved across the page. The way his jaw softened at certain lines. The way he turned each page carefully, not bending the corners, treating my words with the physical respect he gave to things that mattered.

“Read it.” She doesn’t move for a second. Then she crouches, picks it up, and opens it again with fingers that are just a little too tight on the pages. I watch her read the way people watch a bomb being disarmed, careful, focused, knowing exactly when things are about to go wrong. She gets to Adrian Volkov’s name and freezes. There it is.

Chase warns him. “The weird little thing I couldn’t figure out has shown its purpose. It’s positioned perfectly at my clit, and it’s sucking while Hudelone rails into me. Heat burns through my bones, and I’m silenced by the pleasure that builds,” Jax reads aloud with a grin. “Okay, stop reading the fucking book!” Chase laughs, shaking his head as he walks off. “I’m reading them all. Every single one of her books,” Jax smirks, clearly enjoying himself.

Adaeze looked at me for a moment. Then she nodded and we got to work. The bond reading was different from the shielding and broadcasting techniques. More delicate. More specific. Where shielding was about managing what came in and broadcasting was about managing what went out, reading was about going toward something deliberately and understanding what you found there. Adaeze had me practice on the pack first. Sitting in the kitchen with my eyes closed and the book in my lap and Adaeze beside me and the pack out there in the territory going about their day.
