He said it the same way flat, stating a fact, not an invitation. He went to the far shelves and pulled something out and sat at the table near the window. Not close. On the other side of the room entirely. He opened his book and read. I went back to my Covenant text. We did not speak for a long time. The library was quiet in the way that libraries are always quiet, a specific kind of silence that feels occupied rather than empty, full of all the things in the books around you. Outside the narrow windows, the morning light was pale and flat. The fire at the far end of the room popped once and settled.

But I can still feel it, Lucas’s gaze, still on me, still heavy, still there. “Yeah,” I whisper. And we walk, and color me surprise to see Lucas following us to the library.
