Chapter 18: A blank page The morning after the party the Brooklyn warehouse felt really big and quiet. The smell of the party was still fancy perfume and fresh flowers. It was like a memory that would not go away. Elena was sitting at her desk watching a boat move slowly across the East River. The water was dark. The boat was making it all frothy and white. On her computer she was looking at how books she had sold and what people were saying about The Vow of Silence.. The numbers did not seem as important as the ring on her finger and the quietness of the room.

I heard some surprised mutters, but no one objected. “As you may know, Clara is mute,” Ronan said. “I will read her statements for all to hear. Jules will confirm that what I have read is what was written.” Jules stood up and gave my shoulder a quick squeeze. “We like to do things fair and proper here,” she explained in a whisper. I glanced at Gideon, but he was staring fixedly at a point in mid air. He hadn’t glanced at me once this whole time. I stared at my notebook. What could I possibly say in his defense? I didn’t understand anything about war or being a prince or the kinds of decisions he made. I knew he hurt the people here, and they were right to be angry. But I had to try.

With gestures, not words. I sat on the bed slowly and unwrapped it. A new book. Thick, bound in leather, smelling expensive, old, and important at the same time. ‘The Silent Crown.’ I ran my thumb over the title and shook my head. He picked perfectly. Always perfect. His love may be feral, dark, filthy with hunger and violence—but his gifts? They were thoughtful. Personal. Intimate. I opened the book and started reading. Not because I cared about the story.

“The little auditor who thought she could balance the books of hell will be left all alone in the wreckage, with nothing but the silence for company.” The iron-bound book on the pedestal suddenly stopped flipping with a heavy thud that shook the floor. It lay open now, the two blank pages glowing with an inner light that looked like burning embers. It was waiting. The pen, a sharp silver quill that looked more like a needle, sat beside it, gleaming in the red dark.

I don't know why I can't stop thinking about it. I grab my laptop to videocall my brother at the last minute. He doesn’t pick. I sigh, feeling frustrated at myself, at everything. I walk out of the room for the last time cradling the hope that tonight’s dinner will make me just a bit happier. ~ Aton College’s library is never silent. There’s always something. The sound of Mrs. Jimmy clacking on her keyboard or the low hum of the AC units. The debate group whispering points to each other every few seconds.

She hadn’t spoken much since the mission, and that was fine. I didn’t need her words, not yet. She was mine, even when she wasn’t fully aware of it. I leaned back in my chair, watching her. The weight of the world seemed to press on her delicate frame. She was unraveling, slowly but surely. Good. That was exactly how I wanted her.
