Everything stops! Silence.

The camera froze on that image—the gesture of a perfect husband. “I learned that silence gets things done,” Charles said softly. “Noise only gets you noticed.” The screen cut to a close-up of Hazel’s face,the slow lift of her chin, the way her eyes searched the crowd as if she felt something out there watching her. And she was right. He’d been there.

"With cameras on every corner, Charles won't be able to hide for long. He's bound to be caught any minute now." Olivia had barely hung up when a loud knock rattled my door. I did not bother opening it. Instead, I peered through the digital peephole and saw the unmistakable silhouette. "Charles, I can see you out there. Don't mess up again. Turn yourself in, and maybe you can get a second chance," I called out. The knocking grew fiercer as Charles heard me. He was cursing up a storm, but I tuned him out, still pushing for him to give up.

For several moments, the only sound in the room was our breathing. "Rose..." My voice softened. I swallowed hard. Rose kept her back turned toward me. "You're not going to lose anyone. We're fighting this together." Rose finally turned around. Her eyes were red. And within that silence, for the first time since this conversation had begun, I saw Rose stop trying to be strong. He simply remained silent, allowing Rose to release everything she had been holding inside.
