I leaned in,my voice jovial as I spoke to Eric while seated at the table "I mean, have you ever noticed how some words just sound wrong when you say them out loud? Like 'Chthonic ' or ‘Cacophony'?" Pulling out a chair by the table, I press on, “Hey, Tilly. I need to talk to you about Ginger.” Luca tugs a book from the shelf closest to him. On the cover is an illustration of an old man with a bushy beard holding what looks like a spear. The book is titled Death to Those Who Sleep. “Brutal,” Luca murmurs, stuffing it back. “Tilly?” I try again. Luca falls down on a seat across from me, snorting. “What sort of stupid name is Tilly? Kind of reminds me of a—” A sturdy, thick, leather-bound book flies from a shelf and hits Luca on the back of the head. “Quiet doesn’t mean unbothered. Just good at hiding it.” We fell into silence. The only sound was distant thunder rumbling above ground. I wondered how long we’d be down here. Minutes stretched. My mind wandered to how close he was. How alone we were. “Tell me something,” I said finally. “Why’d you become a librarian? You don’t seem like the type who likes being stuck behind a desk all day.” Mr. Kane exhaled softly. “Books don’t talk back. They don’t expect small talk. I like the order. And the stories. What about you? History major with a focus on obscure trade? That’s not common.”

Joy! Making High Cliff a kingdom where they started people’s names with vowels was my tricky way of setting it up so that I can fill in more of my alphabetical goals in later books if I turn the story into a series, which I probably will, and hopefully get some more heroes and heroines’ names checked off my list.
