The only thing I heard was the echo of my wolf whispering one word over and over. Mate. When it finally ended, I bolted for the exit. My chest ached. My hands shook. If I could just make it outside, if I could just breathe, maybe the world would stop spinning. But Silverfang didn’t let omegas escape that easily. At the foot of the stairs, Selene waited. Her heels clicked like a countdown as she walked toward me, her entourage circling like predators. “You think wearing his jacket makes you special?” she said, eyes glittering. She tugged the fabric from my shoulders and tossed it into one of her friends’ arms. “You’re nothing. Remember that.”

One small exhale, barely visible, and something in him went quiet in a way that had nothing to do with peace. The gold left his eyes. Not gradually. It pulled back all at once, like a tide that came in too fast and overcorrected. Silver replaced it, cool and certain, and the man looking at me then was not the man who had taken that one step forward. This one had already made up his mind. I looked down at my hands. My nails had broken the skin on both palms. I had not felt it happen. Four small marks on each hand, barely bleeding, the kind you make when you hold on too hard to something that was never yours to hold onto.

“How can I ever thank…Sylvanius, what is this?” The water dragon had shifted its gaze right to Seraphina and was glaring down at her. “I do believe that I said I swore an oath,” Silver said, lifting Amy into his arms. “You will not hurt the woman I swore an oath to.” Seraphina’s face twisted in rage and in a plot second, vanished, replaced with an eerie smile. “You seem to think I cannot kill you.” Silver glanced at Seraphina and then snorted. She flew into a rage and shot a ball of fire towards him. It landed on his body and vanished up in smoke.
