Chet already has their leader by the throat as I set my sights on a she-wolf I know I can take down swiftly.
Then, something strange happens.
The deer—just moments ago stampeding away from us—turn and begin running back. Not just the deer, but other animals, too. Elk, antelope, even a few panicked coyotes. A stampede like I’ve never seen before.
They are running straight toward us.
The air thickens, chokes me. A wave of unbearable heat slams into my side.
And then I see it.
Flames, bright and ravenous, climbing the mountainside above us.
