The Queen turned to the King, her mouth opening to argue, but his raised hand silenced her. Damien’s shadow fell over me as he crouched slightly, his voice low enough for only me to hear. “Don’t look, little flame,” he murmured, the words gentle despite the tension in his tone. “You don’t need to see this.” The trapdoors fell with a sickening thud. My father, my mother, my brother—gone. A scream tore from my throat, raw and uncontrollable. I collapsed to the ground, my legs giving out beneath me. I didn’t need to see it; the sound alone was enough to shatter what was left of my heart.

“Alpha, your son requests an audience.” A faint smile tugged at Damian’s lips. He leaned back in his chair, the sharpness in his expression easing into quiet amusement. “Let him in.” Moments later, the heavy door opened again — this time to reveal a young boy walking in with confident steps. His posture was straight, his chin lifted, and his eyes gleamed with the unmistakable fire of his lineage. Behind him followed Gamma Liam, pride flickering across his face. The boy — Damon — stopped a few feet from the desk and dropped a freshly caught animal at his father’s feet. A grin spread across his face, proud yet respectful.

The secretary looked horrified. “John.” Damien called calmly. The noise died down and the man turned to him with raised eyebrows. “What? Did you just call me by my first name?” “I did.” Damien tilted his head. “Isn’t that what my father and mother calls you?
