This time, the cheap lock gave way with a loud, cracking noise. The sight that greeted her made her blood run cold. Siron was half-bent over the sink, his hands seemingly stuck inside the mirror, the surface of which was now rippling like black water. His whole body was trembling violently, pulled by an invisible force from behind the glass. His face was corpse-pale, his mouth agape in a silent scream. On the mirror's surface, the blood symbol Siron had drawn glowed with a malevolent red light, and from within it, a pair of burning crimson eyes stared out in triumph.

Miles away, on a luxury yacht— A man in a floral shirt stared at the feed, now washed into blue static. He blinked, then whistled low. “Well, someone’s got attitude.” He replayed the captured second of footage. Freeze frame. Blood-red sunset. A woman, hands crimson, standing among jagged rocks as a whale pod vanished in mist. Violence and mercy. Death and rebirth. “Mermaid?” He lowered his sunglasses, revealing amused, peach-blossom eyes. “No. That’s a siren.”

“I monitored your movements for months. Every day I watched you glide through the water like some kind of water sprite. Like you were born to it, and I couldn’t look away. Were you a siren luring me to my destruction or my lighthouse in the storm?” Abby didn’t like that insinuation. He meant siren in that Sharon Nasari kind of way. “When I saw this statue in your bedroom, I felt uneasy, drawn to its alluring beauty. A calm deity in the face of the storm, standing steadfast in destructive winds.” His thumb ran over a wing. “Men are drawn to your calm; you’re the eye of the hurricane. Even my team has fallen at your feet, wanting to slay your dragons and to protect you.”

The sirens had faded into the night, their wail unraveling into the black horizon like the tail end of a funeral hymn. The last traces of flashing light blinked out, leaving behind the kind of silence that didn’t feel empty, but raw as though the air itself was still ringing from everything it had just witnessed.

The security room is colder than the rest of the house. Fluorescent lights hum overhead. Screens line the walls. There's twelve monitors, split into thirty small squares of surveillance footage. Every corner of Cara Sinclair’s mansion blinks back at me in grayscale. The door clicks shut behind me. I’m alone again. I exhale. The footage changes with every blink, cameras rotating in slow mechanical sweeps. Nothing unusual. No shadows where shadows shouldn’t be. No movement outside the gates. Just the quiet of a mansion that looks more like a museum than a home.

Everything dimmed before it went dark, and the murmuring of voices tickled my ears as I drifted out. No light filtered in through the windows and those overhead were extinguished. Only a tiny lamp above me glowed, casting shadows around the room. Although the hues had changed, the sounds were the same, and I was no longer alone. A bear of a hand clutched mine, but any attempt to turn my head to identify my companion sent shooting pains from behind my eyes, radiating through my brain and bouncing off the bone like blistering light. I whimpered through the suffering, knowing crying would be far worse. My pitiful sobs roused him, but I wasn't able to focus to identify who had assumed the bedsid

She followed closely behind him and the two disappeared into the forest. "Did you notice?" Weaver asked and Alex nodded. "Her brother is blind. That's probably why she thought it best to talk it out." Alex said and Weaver nodded. "Don't tell the others about the male being blind. It'll provoke some of the others to try and run him off." Alex said and Weaver nodded in understanding. "I'll take a group to start setting up markers upon our new territory." Wever said and Alex nodded wondering how someone who couldn't see had survived this long. He had help from his sister but he didn't seem to rely on her. . . .

Selene prevents making a sound and also holds the man's wrist tightly. Selene heard the system panics in her head and so, she decisively shut their connection off. It provided nothing, better keep them out. System: ... "I won't repeat myself more, who sent you here?" The man's eyes turn even darker with that shade of blood eyes as the lights also start blinking and the darkness starts suffocating the both of them. To his surprise, she smirked mockingly and lick her bottom lip.

Invisible. The light above me began to dim and swim. As the voicemail indicator light blinked in the shadows, I closed my eyes for the last time, and fell into the endless dark.
