The road to Blackthorn Woods wound like a scar through the hills, and the rain came harder with every mile. The headlights cut through the darkness, but the world beyond them was nothing but shadows. Tessa’s words echoed in my mind. It’s urgent — don’t tell Ryder. I gripped the steering wheel tighter. Maybe she’d found something new on Marcus. Maybe she didn’t want Ryder involved yet. I’d seen that look in her eyes before — the one that said I have to do this myself. Still, something about this didn’t sit right. The woods were silent when I parked. My phone had no signal. Just static. The trees swayed in the wind, black silhouettes under a bruised sky.

The moon hung heavy and golden over the Blackpine Woods, its light filtering through the tangled canopy to dapple the forest floor. Mira crouched low among the ferns, her heart thudding in her chest as she watched the rest of the pack gather in the clearing. she rushed her words and waited for a response with her brows up. “This is Deep-Woods,” the boy replied to her question in a deep voice. “Deep-Woods?” Amber asked and her forehead creased. “Cinder is a small City so you should know this place. It’s not where anyone wishes to know anyway but it is called Deep-Woods because it is a thick forest with trees in it. If you wander in it, you can get lost. We are not too deep in the forest though. As soon as you escape from here and walk some distance, you will be on the streets in no time,” the boy explained to her and Amber slowly nodded.

She rushes to see the queen with this new development, she needs to nip this in the bud, if word gets out that Dean is mated to a siren, the king would protect her with his life. “You seem to feel like since I agreed to help you, you can barge in my room and disturb my peace Briar,” Penelope glares, “what is it? Did you brat run into trouble?” “Yes, a siren,” Briar says. Penelope had lit up in excitement, any news on sirens was her favorite. “Explain Briar,” Penelope orders. “His majesty’s mate is not a mermaid but a siren,” Briar says angrily, “ugh, you know how hard it was to kill just one that time, she died because she chose to, how are we going to get rid of this one.”

“With me. Now.” Silas glanced between us, then nodded once. “The woods are restless. Take him. But stay close to the estate. The priests are circling.” Rook didn’t wait for more permission. His massive hand closed around my wrist and he pulled me toward the heavy back doors that led into the ancient cursed woods. I grabbed a thick cloak on the way out, heart hammering with equal parts fear and anticipation.

He is twice my size and more powerful than any other wolf I have seen till now. He unleashes a growl and takes steps in my direction while I am struggling in the mud. The distance between us shrinks into inches with him casting a shadow on me. He locks eyes with mine, tensing up my muscles. He sniffs the scent on my neck while I stay quiet, frozen on the ground. His big mouth is touching me everywhere over my top, snarling softly beneath growls. Suddenly, a loud siren announcing the end of the search party echoes through the woods. As he looks up, following the sound of the siren, I regain my senses and escape from his shadow.

I'd been hearing distant sounds and strange noises echo through the damned woods. A shiver ghosted through me. Navae Woods was considered the scariest forest in the continent so far. What made it terrifying was that it was crawling with monsters from different species. The instructions had specially warned me to avoid them. Despite the bright moon hovering up in the sky, I could barely see anything in the darkness. It could be dangerous to continue to wander in the darkness, and I couldn't keep being out in the open. Shae buzzed from my amethyst necklace, reminding me I wasn't alone before I kept moving from one tree to another.

The woods are thick here. Then I hear it—faint but growing. Sirens. “Do you hear that?” I gasp. Elias squints. “What?” “Police. Coming from the next road. I can hear the sirens.” He looks at me like I’ve sprouted another head. “How the hell can you tell where they’re coming from?” “I just can.” My voice is breathless, urgent, as I say, “Take the next turn. We’ll meet them.”
