As he comes past, Klempner sniffs, jolting back in his seat, then looking down and identifying the source of the smell, casts him a black look.
Uncowed by the gimlet stare he's getting, Scruffy hovers: Blackie is holding prize position on the rug in front of the fire. My half-pint terrier grumbles and the big dog's ears droop.
For a moment, Blackie resists, but the grumble turns to a growl, a deep bass rumble out of all proportion to Scruffy's rag-tag size and appearance. Glumly, Blackie surrenders his spot, moving to sit pasted to Klempner's leg, head resting on his knee.
