She pointed toward the nightstand where she’d apparently left a few crayon drawings earlier when she came in. One showed three stick figures holding hands under a big yellow sun, with a fourth tiny scribble that looked suspiciously like a baby sibling. “That’s me, that’s Mommy, that’s you, and that’s… maybe a little brother or sister one day? I want a baby brother, though.” Kimberly’s eyes widened slightly, a surprised laugh bubbling out of her as she glanced at Bryce. He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused, but there was a new heat in his expression as he met Kimberly’s gaze.

I whispered to myself. But my hands had already moved. Inside the package was a single sheet of paper, folded once. No note. No explanation. Just a drawing. My breath left me in a sharp, broken exhale. It was done in crayon. Bold lines. Messy edges. A child’s certainty in every stroke. A woman stood at the center of the page, her arms raised. Blue and yellow zigzags burst from her hands, stretching outward like lightning. Behind her stood two children. One taller. One smaller. Both drawn close to her back, like they were hiding and standing tall at the same time.

“Can I hang this in her crib?” I smiled. “Of course, sweetheart. What is it?” She held it up proudly. It was a crayon drawing of the four of us—me, Alex, Lina, and baby Liana—with hearts and stars and a big sun beaming down from the corner. Damian wasn’t in it. Nathan wasn’t in it. It was just us. “I made it to scare away nightmares,” Lina whispered. I swallowed hard, blinking quickly. “She’s lucky to have you as a big sister.”
