One evening on a weekend, I checked the time difference and FaceTimed my parents. Through the screen, Sasha took in my rosy complexion, her eyes crinkling with a smile. “Oh my, Naomi is having a blast there. I guess the breakup was the right decision.” I shared with them the photos of Iceland’s aurora and glaciers with a grin. After some small talk, my father sighed out of the blue. Something seemed to be on his mind. “What’s wrong, Dad?” Sasha set down her kitchen whisk and wiped her hands, her tone resigned. “What do you think? It’s about Lorenzo.”

I wrote back: I met Six. She raised an eyebrow at me before responding: "Ok, and? I waited a while before responding, and I hit him in the eye with my calculus textbook before running away. I take my blessing back! The stupid girl burst out laughing, and Six chose that moment to walk into class. The shiner I caused starting to appear under his eye, which only made Summer laugh harder. By now, even the teacher thought she was losing it.

I am Zeiah, I grew up thinking that everybody around me is ordinary and I am like them, but that's what I thought. I remembered everything, from the growl of that notorious creature, the slashing of the swords, and the explosion, all of it was clear. I close my eyes, quivering into the ideas which my mind could only bear. How I wish everything were just a nightmare. I let out a deep breath and found myself in the middle of nowhere.

They all felt like a shelter from the world, like a place for prayer and silent contemplation. The vampire finally stopped and faced them. She stared back at Caitlin with her large, compassionate eyes, and looked otherworldly. "We are at the turn-of-the-century," she said. Caitlin thought for a moment. "What century?" she asked. "The sixteenth, of course. It is 1599.” 1599, Caitlin thought. The idea was overwhelming. Once again, she wished she’d read her history more closely. Previously, she had gone from 1791 to 1789. But now she was in 1599. Nearly a 200 year leap.

"So cold in here." While worried about being stuck here forever, I spot a pedicel in the center. I walk towards it, and up close, there is a book. Leather and looks worn out. This book is the size of a medical textbook. I know because my mom bought me a textbook about being a nurse for my eighth birthday. She wanted me to be a nurse. Instead of studying, I use the book as a stool or a cushion when I'm too short for high tables. I even used some pages to make a paper machete; my mom was so angry that instead of grounding me, I had to attend her book club meetings and listen to horny women and their book about a man named Pablo. Instead, I would be grounded for a month rather than get nightmar
