"Such arrogance!" Bashir yelled, unable to accept he was being insulted by a mere mortal. He raised his right hand once more and caused the black light to envelop him before shooting at Adrian once more. His strike seemed capable of destroying the whole world if he wanted to, looking exactly like a death reaper's scythe as it went for Adrian's neck. Everyone tensed up when they saw how much Bashir wanted to kill Adrian. Yet, just as they were all breaking out in cold sweat, Adrian's muscles suddenly bulged. He was mustering all of the strength he could command and focusing it all into his arms.

"You've been leeching off our genius for years, but he’ll always be ahead of you. You’re just a rat in the dark who can never keep up." Their arrogance burned into me. I drew in a deep breath. "It’s fine. I have another robot. I’ll use that one to compete." I was ready to shut myself away again when my phone lit up. Lila was calling. I’d told her clearly not to contact me before the championship. My eyes stayed cold on the screen. I blocked her number without hesitation and turned to Zane. "He’s not going to guess this one. There’s no way Adrian will think of an animal-model bot."

"We need to get to Emily." Paoli loaded his crossbow with a silver-tipped arrow and let it fly. There was a thud, followed by a yelp that confirmed he'd hit his target. "We're running out of time to escape, and fast," Paoli announced as the ring of wolves moved to box them in. Sekhmet glanced around a bit ruefully, as if it pained him to leave a battle unfought. I stumble back but he doesn't falter. He swings. I duck. I kick his knee cap with as much strength as I can muster and he stumbles. I take him down hard into the dirt. My time in Skyless Keep has taught me grit and scrappiness. Maybe not the most impressive way of fighting, but it's effective. For a second it's just silence. Heart beating loudly in my ears.
