Isla’s POV – The Dreaming Void I felt darkness wrapping its arms around me. Perhaps the choas before now was what led me to succumb to its cold embrace. But then I immediately learned to not take things at face value because the pseudo solace I thougth darkness gifted me turned into an inferno that consumed everything in its path — everything such as me. This darkness wasn't the soft kind that came with sleep, but the kind that pressed down heavy, like soil poured over a coffin.

“And the darkness can be your friend if you want it to be. It holds no hidden dangers to you. It’s clean and simple. Like a thick blanket over all your senses. And fire… well, fire is the greatest luxury the gifted of us can afford. It’s useful and it purifies our meat. When we have fire, especially during winter, life is good. “I myself was sold into slavery by my parents. I never knew who they were. The only connection I have to them is a little pendant that has hung around my neck ever since I was an infant. I was brought up in the darkness of the mines. It was the laborers who taught me how to speak and how to walk.

The weight of that bitter history crashed down on me with the force of a freight train, leaving me breathless and reeling. The Darkness within me stirred, its presence growing more insistent as it begged to be unleashed, to claim dominion over my soul. But what sent a chill down my spine was its twisted longing to seek out Raphael and surrender to its darkest impulses in his presence.

He grumbled and disappeared from my field of vision. I stayed where I was and stared at the box in my lap. So I would really do it, face the monsters from my nightmares in person and make sure those monsters could never ruin a little girl's life again. Not by finally getting my vengeance that I had longed for for so many years, but I would see that they were locked away for the rest of their lives. At least that was what I owed my parents. I wanted to move, to turn, to fight, but I couldn’t. My feet felt rooted to the ground, my breath caught in my throat. The darkness pressed in, stretching each second into an eternity. Then, just as suddenly as it had gone out, the light returned.
