I chuckled at her seriousness and climbed into bed, deciding I needed to be the little spoon tonight. ... The sun came shining through my room, waking me. I slept through the night relatively peacefully. I turned in bed to feel another pair of arms wrapped around me. My eyes shot opened, and I jumped straight up. I looked down to see my sister lying in bed on the other side of me. "Angel? What the hell are you doing here?" I said a little loudly. She hardly stirred. She turned over, yawning. "Damn, Kwennie. Why are you so loud?"

I walked to my wing slowly because my legs felt strange and the house felt strange and everything about the last five minutes felt like something that had happened to someone else. I paced. End to end. Wall to wall. The full length of it. It felt good. He had said it with that smile. The one I had never seen. The one that was never for me. So he had slept with her. My sister. I paced until two in the morning and could not sleep.

He climbed onto the huge bed beside me and stared at the ceiling for half a minute. Then he rolled onto his side. “Mommy. This bed is so big. I’m going to sleep next to you every night. Nobody gets to push you around.” The next morning I started shadowing my father through Northcrest affairs. Patrol rotation. Resource allocation. Diplomacy. Asher sat on the small wooden stool beside the desk every day and listened. He was very quiet. My father brought in tea and looked at his grandson’s too-quiet face. “How much did this child go through, to come out this composed.”

I don’t think there’s anything more uncomfortable than watching my own sister–who has done her best to try and look like me–blatantly flirt with the man who I slept on the same bed with the night before and who has also just recently confessed his desire to be with me. What’s even more weird is how nobody, not my parents nor Hunter, has pointed out anything out of the ordinary. It makes me wonder if it’s just me seeing this or somehow my mind has made it up.

For days I have slept in the hospital keeping my sister company at night and leaving for work very early in the morning, I practically lived in the hospital with her but I doubt if I cared one bit about that, I love my sister. I missed my bed though it wasn't so comfortable like that of the exotic hotels but I missed sleeping on it with my sister and I couldn't wait for the day when I would smile with so much delight and confidence and proudly say "finally it's over, we won."

Luke even offered to have a security detail with her at all times but she refused. I sighed and watched my Sister sleep in my arms. I just wanted to fix everything for her and it destroyed me that I couldn't. I held her for the rest of the night and she seemed to be able to sleep peacefully. At least, I could do that for her. Eventually I drifted off as well, resting my cheek on her head. Her alarm went off at six and Eve jumped up and turned it off before it could wake her. Eve looked at us and smiled. I grinned back. "You're a good brother." Eve said as she came over and kissed me.

Like he was waiting to see how far I would go to deny it. My sister laughed softly, completely unaware of the tension suffocating the space between us. “You two are already getting along,” she said, clearly pleased. “That’s good.” Getting along? If only she knew. I forced a small smile, my hands clenched at my sides to stop them from shaking. “I think I should go, I need to freshen up” I said suddenly. Too fast. Too desperate. Both of them noticed. My sister frowned. “Already?” “I’m just… tired.”

I didn't notice that I fell asleep, even though I tried to stay awake. When I woke up, I was startled when my sister was no longer sitting in front of me! With a terrified soul, I searched her all around until I found her in the kitchen, doing stuff that will surely make our mom angry. I was half unconscious at that time as I grabbed her pulse back to the room. I forced Sarah to lay down beside me and sleep. It was just four in the morning. After what I did to her, I hugged her from the back so that she can't escape. Then, my eyes closed by themselves.

About meeting the step-sister who'd finally decided to grace us with her presence after a decade of silence. I should have felt guilt about missing dinner, but all I felt was relief. I wasn't ready to play happy family when every nerve in my body was screaming for a woman I couldn't have. My phone buzzed with a text from Dad: "Are you still on your way? Your sister is here."
