ATHENA One month later…. “You know,” Sloane says, tossing a bag of tortilla chips into the cart with flair, “I think my uterus has grown cobwebs. Literal. Freaking. Cobwebs.” I snort so loud a nearby toddler swivels to look at me. “Sloane!” “What?!” she grins shamelessly, pushing her sunglasses up on her head as she saunters past the cereal aisle. “It’s been so long, Athena. I’m talking ghost-town, tumbleweed-rolling, 'CLOSED FOR BUSINESS' kind of long.”

I didn't hear the door swing open behind me. "Looking for something?" I froze. Sloan stood in the doorway, open shirt, dark eyes glinting like obsidian in moonlight. He was catching me in the wrong place for the second time in a row. "I couldn't sleep," I said quickly in my defence. "I was going to look for something to read." "Did you find any?" His eyes dropped to my hand, where I still held the shawl, trying to hide the outline of the flash drive under its folds.

Sloan: “where is his last location?” Daniel: “The girl was taken from Albany this afternoon.” Sloan: “We are riding out at first light.” Daniel: “We? Who is We?” Sloan: “I’m working with someone on this one.” Daniel: “You never work with anyone” Sloan: “Yeah, well, this time, it’s personal for this person, so I told him he could help.” Daniel: “Him? Sloan, you’re working with a man?” Sloan: “um... I have to go. Bye!”

Past the living room where Sloane sat on the couch with her laptop, pretending to type. She didn’t look up. I didn’t say anything. I just kept walking. Out the front door. Into the heat. Into whatever came next. Because whatever came next… it wasn’t going to be Chase Hartley. Not anymore.

I couldn't help but giggle at his expense, but at the same time, I didn't want to be blamed for anyone's death. "Okay, I'm sorry. Please don't cancel my admission," I said, feeling defeated. He let out a sigh of relief. "Only on one condition," he said with a smirk. I rolled my eyes. "And what is that?" "You see that bookshelf over there?" he pointed to the corner of his office. I turned to look at the bookshelf, and sure enough, the books were scattered. "What do you want me to do there?" I asked. "Well, you're going to arrange it, and it must be according to their titles," he said, clearly enjoying himself.
