Liora descended carefully, the rocks warm beneath her hands.
Halfway down, she felt another presence.
A man stepped from the shadows — tall, robed in gray, his eyes the color of dying stars.
“I’ve been waiting,” he said.
“Who are you?”
“My name was Eron once,” he answered quietly.
“The first to guard the flame before it had a name.”
Liora froze. “Before Lyra?”
He nodded. “She was the first light. I was her shadow. Balance demands both.”
He gestured toward the canyon below. “But your kind forgot. You healed and purified until only light remained — and light, without shadow, devours itself.”
