♤Unknown♤ Turning the knob, I walked into the study where Nox was waiting for me. The thick scent of cigarette smoke hit me, and I wrinkled my nose. "How many times do I have to tell you not to fucking smoke in my house?" I snapped, shutting the door behind me. He just bared his teeth, plucked the cigarette from his lips, and crushed it into the ashtray. I walked over and sat down across from him. He crossed his legs and leaned back in his seat, moving with an ease that didn’t match his bulk.

The cigarette smoke hit Sasha before she even opened the apartment door. Marlboro Reds, her father’s brand. He only smoked those when he was celebrating something, which meant someone else was about to have a very bad day. She fumbled with her keys, the metal slick with sweat from her seven hour shift at the diner. The grease smell clung to her uniform, mixing with the cheap cherry blossom body spray she’d bought at the dollar store. She was nineteen years old and she smelled like burnt coffee and broken dreams.

But Xavier seems to be smitten by her. And he fucking hates it. Frustrated, he stood up and left. He went straight to the pool and took some cigarettes in his pockets. He rarely smokes, only because his mother would definitely scold him if she was still alive. But she was not here, so there was no stopping him. "The fuck..." he chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. He couldn't believe he did such a thing. It was still beyond his belief he would do something like that. "I must've gone insane."

He again takes out the cigarette while inhaling the smoke in and out. Jenny comes back and looks at Austin, who is smoking. She coughed while inhaling the smoke, placing her hand on her mouth. He turned back while looking at her before throwing the cigarette out of the room. “Smoking is injurious to health!” She muttered and approached while looking at him. He scoffed while looking on the other side before sharing a look with her. “But this is the only way to relieve stress!“ “Was that a bad nightmare? ” She pouted her lips.

She rubbed her palms nervously together as she decided to go to him. He was smoking, inhaling slowly and quietly puffing out the smoke into the air. As if he sensed her presence, he exhaled one last time and puffed the smoke out slowly. Isla waited a few seconds for the smoke to clear before stepping beside him. “You know, smoking isn’t the best answer to anything" she mumbled. "Really?" Sarcasm was not absent from his tone. She nodded, going further, "There are a lot of disadvantages; cancer, infections, dental problems, hearing loss, heart failure…”

“You weren’t meant to hear that…” “And that makes it okay?” I shot back before he could say anything more. “Ugh…I could use another cigarette,” I heard him saying. I was certain I wasn’t supposed to hear that, but his words made me gasp. “Are you smoking, Zach?” I asked him. “Since when did you smoke and why am I just learning about that?” “Look, I don’t have enough time to argue with you,” he murmured, sounding as defeated as I felt. “Xaden isn’t doing good. The doctor doesn’t think he has much longer. We can’t wait for you forever, Anila.”

At the agency, a guy who looked to be in his late forties was puffing on a cigarette, while Xoan, with his leg and arm in casts, looked totally bummed out, practically choking on the secondhand smoke. Madeline's brow knitted together again. "What's the deal here?" The smoker glanced at her and snuffed out his cigarette. "Madeline? Oh, it's you. Huh, you're even more of a knockout than in Asher's pics." He nudged Xoan with his foot. "Why don't you crack a window, get some fresh air in here? Didn't you notice the pregnant lady, you numbskull?" Xoan was on the verge of losing it, grumbling: "How many times do I have to tell you to quit that nasty habit?"

Marve asked. “Why do you sound like you’re new to this Marve? Of course I’m not gonna keep the end of the deal! What am I going to gain just giving them what they want?” Xavier said. He came closer to Marve now, patted him gently on the cheek twice and put the unlit part of the cigar in his mouth. “Go on, take a puff!” Xavier said, holding onto the cigar in Marve’s mouth and not letting go. After taking a few puffs non stop without a break, Marve’s eyes turned red and teary and one could see the veins all over his face from feeling choked with the smoke as he started coughing out smoke from his mouth and nose when Xavier removed the cigar from his mouth.

There was a table and two chairs, Jason followed him and took a seat, facing Xavier. "Be done with it, I'm exhausted" he watched as Xavier pulled out a stick of cigarettes which lay on the table in Infront of him and puffed up smoke. "Someone's changed, I see. Cigarettes ain't your thing anymore" Jason ignored him, shooting daggers at him

When he returned to his office, he began to smoke cigarette after cigarette again. He kept thinking about Yvette's words. "Are you one of the people who'd hurt me before? If you're not, then why don't I remember you?" He felt like there was a wad of cotton lodged in his chest. He felt suffocated and uncomfortable. When Mark walked in, the entire room was already filled with cigarette smoke. Ever since Yvette had disappeared four years ago, Xavier had started to smoke excessively. Why was he still like this even though Yvette had come back?
