I coughed and coughed, feeling the tears pricking at the corners of my eyes as I saw a glint of amusement in his eyes. “Are you alright?” he asked, his lips twitching as he fought back a smile. “I’m fine,” I gasped, wiping my mouth. “I just... forgot today is Saturday.” Jake burst into laughter. “You forgot, huh? And here I am, on my toes, and can’t wait to bring you there...again, though I enjoyed seeing you flustered.” His voice dropped low. “Don’t get used to it,” I rolled my eyes, trying to hide my embarrassment. It was their fault. They made me come so hard my brain forgot some details in my life. Good thing I still remembered my name.

I cackled as the memory of Lauren’s face, twisted with anger as she left the mansion, replayed in my head and I giggled. It wasn’t as funny as this when it happened, but right now the whole scene seemed surreal and unreal to me. I’d never stood up to anyone like that before, and it still felt strange and funny But I had enough of her bullshit because it was becoming too overboard. For the first time, I wasn’t the one hiding behind my shells and keeping calm like it didn't hurt and broke me into pieces. My thoughts drifted back to a few hours ago, and I couldn't help but burst out laughing loudly again, I haven't laughed like this for days but it seems everything is becoming funny right now.

He looks away as he says, “I’m sorry, I had no idea” And something in me cracks, not the bad kind. The pressure has been building for days, weeks, years, and this is such a ridiculous coincidence that it slips through my fingers before I can stop it. I fight the laugh bubbling up. This whole scenario is ridiculous, and it’s not funny, but for some reason it really fucking is. I can’t hold it in, and I laugh. Full on, cathartic laughter. It feels good to let out some sort of emotion for once.

So I pulled out my phone again, this time scrolling through my saved folder labeled “EMERGENCY GIGGLES.” I found a meme I knew would work. A sketchy cartoon cat trying to play a grand piano with arms that were way too short. It was dumb. Like, impressively dumb. “Look at this,” I said, turning the screen toward him. He glanced at it. Blinked. Then let out a snort. “That’s so stupid,” he said. “But you smiled.” “No, I didn’t.” “You totally did.” He rolled his eyes, took a long sip of juice, then bumped his shoulder into mine. “Okay. Maybe I did.”

Someone had used my picture from the launch and made a meme! “It’s hilarious,” Clyde said, laughing dryly. I stared at it in disbelief, and my eyes caught the handle at the bottom. In an instant, my lips turned down at the corners. That bastard! How dare he?!

Suddenly, I hear a quiet laugh. “Holy shit! You’re forcing me back into my teenage masturbating years! You have no idea how long it’s been since I last jerked off!” “Well then… you are welcome,” I snort, hearing him burst into loud, rolling laughter. Damn, his laugh is ridiculously contagious! Britney fūcking Spears had totally gotten to her. Should I consider banning all her songs from the internet and every streaming platform?

I couldn't have forgotten that. And yet tonight, everyone laughed. And I wasn't an exemption. I caught myself smiling at something one of the warrior pups did—he’d shoved a honey-drenched tart into his sister’s face, and the little girl shrieked, chasing him around with a chunk of bread like it was a sword. I couldn’t help it and so I laughed out real hard. At least, something to forget everything that had bothered me for days. I think I needed this so badly and to think it came just at the right time.

The day before the high school reunion, the queen bee who'd bullied me for three years suddenly posted a video in the group chat. Everyone laugh for different reasons but for whatever reason we laugh, it should be to create and hold on to happy memories that would last and stand for a lifetime.
