I shrug. “Ah. How romantic.” Violet scoffs. “Nothing romantic about it.” I snap at her, making sure she knows I don’t see Gemini like that. I don’t care if it’s a lie. No one, especially Gemini, can know of my feelings. “I grabbed her ankle and took off like an animal, dragging her along.” “Damn.” Ames blinks. “For as long as I can remember, the lycan king is always offered a virgin from each pack…” She narrows her eyes. “What do you do with them?”

Aelindra shouted, her voice sharp. Drevon seized his blade, blood dripping from his wounded arm. He approached the fallen king, his heart pounding. The king glared up at him, his glowing eyes filled with defiance even in his final moments. “You will never break the Lycans,” the king said, his voice a low growl. “Our spirit cannot be extinguished.” Drevon hesitated for the briefest of moments, then drove his blade into the king’s chest. The Lycan let out a final, ear-splitting roar, the sound filled with pain and fury. His massive body shuddered, then fell still.

When Kiyan and I were much younger and more naïve than we now were, my grandmother would sit us down in front of the fireplace every night and tell us a story. It never changed and always began with the same person- Lycaon. He was said to be the first of the lycans, cursed to shapeshift into a wolf by Zeus. The reason? He tried to serve the great and powerful Zeus human flesh. Furious with Lycaon’s trickery, Zeus cursed him. From there the lycan curse spread. Lycans would bite humans, cursing them to the same fate. Eventually, word had spread about these strange shape-shifting creatures. And so, a war broke out between the humans and lycans, both believing that the world had no place for the

Silas stood up from his chair and returned quickly with a glass of water. I started to button my shirt with a sly smile on my lips. “So do as I say, it’s an order.” I let out a low growl. “Yes, Alpha Dorian.” He bared his neck in submission and swallowed up the words he wanted to say. I could see the look on his face, how worried he looked.

Let him hear the rot at the heart of his precious alliances. Father finally spoke, his tone measured, like he was addressing a wayward pup instead of the daughter they had betrayed. “We came because Moonstone Pack needs you, Bella. The Lycan King trusts you. You have access to their world now. Their secrets. Their strengths.” I stared at him, waiting for the punchline. Surely this wasn’t going where I thought it was. “You want me to… what?” I asked slowly, still holding the knife ready.

Several elders hurried toward the chamber. Elder Alaric stood among them with two other elders. Their expressions were grim as they silently signaled the elite warriors waiting nearby. Each warrior held a glowing vial. They entered the king's chamber without hesitation. The sounds that followed made Lucian tremble. The king's chamber was filled with growls, howls and crashing sounds. Everything lasted several long minutes before the warriors dragged a massive silver-furred Lycan outside. I wish we’d never stepped into that room! I wailed to her.

Even his high-ranking wolves were all captured, their wrist wrapped with silver cuffs, their jaws hard with bruises. The sound of pack members weeping in fear could be heard.
