Her touch lingered, warm and steady. I carefully unwrapped the velvet. Inside was a small, smooth river stone. It was dark, almost black, perfectly worn down by water, and it had a single, thin line of brilliant white quartz running diagonally across its surface. “It’s beautiful,” I murmured, running my thumb over the cold, smooth rock.
