Loving on a borrowed time Larry was fixing his gaze on his desktop trying to decipher the numerical figures that were displayed on the spreadsheet in his ledger . He was looking nervous as he was struggling to balance the numbers that seemed to be confusing him every time he tried to look at them. He was having a meeting in a thirty minute's time. "Oh damn", he said as he was re-working on a same column that seemed to be giving him a hard time.

"You know this stuff. You just don't want to." Lee shook his head. "Is there anything I can do to return the favor?" "Nah, you're good," "You sure? I hate being indebted to people." "In that case, I'll save it for a rainy day," I grinned. "Pain in the ass you are." Lee shook his head again. "It's a gift. Mind if I borrow your laptop real quick? Mine died and I wanna check on the boots I ordered yesterday." "I thought you were all about hardwork and diligence when you're not handcuffed."

How is that possible when she’s the one who borrowed this money? “It’s you.” “...” “I lent it, under your name…my lady…”

I cleared my throat and began speaking "I need to borrow 3 million dollars. Can you lend me that amount?"

I still wasn’t used to that nickname. “I’ll get straight to the point. Can I borrow some money?” “I haven’t been paid yet,” he said. “But I know someone who can lend you.” Relief washed over me. “Really? Can I talk to them?” “I’ll call them now. Just meet them at a coffee shop near you. How much do you need?” I hesitated. Borrowing from a stranger felt humiliating… but I had no choice. “I need five thousand.” There was a pause.

I ask her "10 million" she shrugs again. Did I just hear wrong this stupid girl owes people ten million? "Lord bless everything that is holy. How did you even come to owing them that much?" I ask in shock. She takes gum out of her jacket and chucks it into her mouth. "I borrowed it from them" she shrugs as if borrowing that much money was not a crime. Who would borrow that much money to someone with no credit. Then it hits me like a freight train.

“The guys I borrowed from.” My heart dropped. I knew that Victor had taken out a loan. It was about a year ago, when his mother was terribly ill. The loan sharks in our area were known to be very dangerous– especially when their money wasn’t returned on time. I never wanted him to go that far, but it wasn’t like I had five thousand dollars laying around to give him for his mother’s surgery. He didn’t have a choice. And to think that she had ended up dying anyways was just cruel.
