Peter pushed the door open just a crack. The light from the single bare bulb in the basement cast long, grotesque shadows. His father was there, a menacing silhouette, his arm raised. In his hand, he held a heavy, bat. His mother was on the ground, huddled in the corner, her body a trembling heap. There was blood on her face, and her arms were wrapped protectively around her head.
