Lillian barely breathed as Aedric reached inside, pulling out a single worn leather-bound tome. He turned back to her, holding it out. "If you want answers," he said quietly, "then read." The voice makes us both jump. An elderly woman with silver-streaked hair pulled into a severe bun peers at us from behind wire-rimmed glasses. "Those histories are delicate. And dangerous, some might say."

While I might not know many words yet, I know enough that I can read the title of this book. “The Story of Carnelia the Great,” I mumble to myself. Opening the book to the first page I see the name “Primus” scrawled in an uneven hand on the cover. So this was his as a child. I smile, thinking of what a little monster he must have been like as I turn to the title page. “CARNELIA” is hand-lettered in bold calligraphy. Underneath, is the image of a gold and red dragon, her body curled in the sky, replacing the sun.

Her wrinkled hand pointed at the teenage woman on her right side. “This chatty granddaughter of mine is looking for a notebook with a purple wolf cover. Are you selling such a book, Alpha?” she asked the young Alpha before her. The corners of her wrinkled eyes formed a sweet smile when she saw the surprised face of the young Alpha wearing a red plaid shirt. “Sorry. Here is only a book cover with the yellow wolf logo, corresponding to the wolf logo of our clan chairman.” His two hands were fused in front of his chest as a sign of apology.

“History and strategy, mostly. As Alpha, I don’t typically have much time to read for pleasure.” As he spoke, I spotted a book on one of the higher shelves. It had a cover of purple leather, and though the silver lettering on the spine was too far away for me to read, it looked enticing. I stood up on my toes, but even reaching as high as I could, my fingers just brushed the bottom of the book’s spine. I nearly jumped out of my skin as I felt Alec move behind me, his broad chest only inches from my back. His hand brushed mine as he reached up easily and pulled the book from the shelf.

I was about to give up when my fingers brushed against something different. It was massive, bound in what looked like black, flayed skin, and heavy enough to make my muscles strain as I pulled it from its slot. It landed on the reading table with a heavy thud that sent a cloud of dust into the air. I wiped the grime from the cover, my breath catching in my throat. The title was embossed in faded silver script: Vampiric Death and Rebirth.
