It cracks against the drywall, splintering the frame, and then slumps to the ground. Lucas moves so fast I can’t tell what he’s doing until a sickening crack of bones rings out, twisting the creature’s head around. As soon as he drops it, the thing explodes into rats, all dead expect one. “Wait,” I yell as Lucas goes to stomp on it. The thing writhes around on the ground, trying to get off its back. “It might go back to—I don’t know—a home base or something.” Lucas nods. “A pied piper, so to speak.”

They enticed me with this nightmare so they just have to be ready. It is now pay-back time.

I am better than the Kinduri. Without fear, I march straight up to that darkness. I gather Neron around me. I let it fill me, fill me right to the brim. It’s coursing through me, beating with the steadiness of a drum. I hold my hands up. They’re alight with Neron. And I plunge my hands into the heart of the darkness. Screams. Mine. Valen’s. Screams of a thousand Kinduri. Screams of Cyrillius. I’m overcome with noise and madness. Like sound is pummeling me and will leave me a bloodied, broken mess on the ground.

“It just doesn’t make sense. Besides, well… we were tired last night. Maybe we imagined it, or something like that.” “You can’t both have the same hallucination. That’s impossible,” Alex replied, his voice firm but steady. Scarlett crossed her arms, nervous and confused. “I just can’t believe it… I really can’t. It’s just… I don’t know…” Alex stepped closer and gently took her hands. “Look into my eyes, Scarlett,” he asked in a whisper. She lifted her gaze, still full of doubt—and then she saw it. Alex’s eyes glowed an intense, unnatural green, something supernatural, as if she were getting lost in his stare, drawn in and terrified at the same time.

The familiar sounds of moaning filled my ears, and I turned deathly pale. It was a recording of that day when Samson and I were together on this very couch. I lunged for the phone, trying to snatch it, but he was too quick. Trying to control my panic, I confronted him. "Did you install cameras in Samson's house?!"

I said, brushing away strands of hair from my face. "Nightmares do not make wolves sound like they're dying. This…sounded as though you were fighting for your life. Tell me, what was it?" His expression stiffened as his brows pulled into a frown. I looked at him, but the look in his eyes told me he would not let this go. I sighed and shifted against the bed while he settled beside me. "Would you believe me if I told you some nightmares are memories?” Dominic's brows knitted together in confusion.

Lucas would reach for butterflies or flowers, coaxing them closer with tiny sparks before giggling when they fley away. But on the fourth night, the calm finally seized. I woke up to Lucas crying, not his usual fussy whimper, but a sharp, distressed sound that pulled at my soul. Damon was already out of bed, reaching the crib before me. Our son’s eyes were wide with fear, little hands grasping at the air as golden sparks moved erratically. “They’re in his head,” I whispered, horror rising inside of me. “The ancients found a way past the relics.”

He flicks the light on, and I wince at the brightness before he closes the door behind him. Soon after, the muted sound of the steady shower stream hitting the tiles fills the silent void. I close my eyes and focus on the pattering purr of the water moving through old pipes. In a matter of seconds, exhaustion pulls me into a plague of nightmares—detached, groping hands, bullets, so many bullets, and at the centre of it all, a terrified little boy with eyes as black as night.

It was far too quiet, and that allowed everyone a moment of respite. Slightly confused, Nightmare lowered his weapon and looked around. Without warning, the wall in front of them burst open. A shaped sonic blast ripped through the wood and ferrocrete like it was made of foam. The sonic blast had also struck everyone inside, who were immediately dazed. Their minds spun as their sense of balance was completely shattered. Unable to tell left from right or up from down, they stumbled around as the dust settled. Eva and a handful of the Seven burst into the room and quickly disabled the thugs with merciless precision and brutal strikes. The thugs stood no chance.
