NIGHTMARES. A very bad or frightening dream. Anna was starting to lose count of the number of nightmares she’s been having since Josh’s death but whenever she woke up with one, clearing her head with a jog had been working well on her. She lets out a sigh as she turns sideways to stare at the mini alarm clock she had next to her bed. The time read 6:00 am and she hated the fact that she had to be awake at this early hour of the day.

I could see that he was genuinely worried. “Yes, it was just a nightmare. A chillingly lifelike and haunting dream...” I mumbled, my voice sounded groggy. It was just a nightmare, right? A small chuckle escaped me and I looked up at him. “I guess that is why it’s called a nightmare. Night terrors often feel incredibly realistic.” I could still feel the remnants of fear lingering in my mind, as if the dream had embedded itself into my thoughts. The more I tried to shake it off, the stronger its grip on me became.

I pushed it open silently and entered. It was everything I had expected. The exact opposite of my room. The themes here were black and grey. Black furniture, grey walls, grey and white beddings. The air conditioning was off, but it was so damn cold in here, the air so tight I could hardly breathe. Or it was just the fact that I knew my presence here was wrong. It was much bigger than my room, obviously. And I liked it. I was someone who suffered from nightmares, but paradoxically, the darkness here, was calming.

I found myself in an unfamiliar bed, and it jolted me awake. The air was filled with the aroma of food. I looked around and found myself in a clean apartment. My clothes weren't changed, thank goodness. Someone texted me. Samuel. 'Working overtime tonight. Happy Valentine's Day, honey.' I scrolled through TikTok. Samuel probably had no idea that I knew his secret account's details. He had a short uploaded. That bastard was having fun with some ladies. They looked fresh and innocent. He had a good eye for them, I guess.

She doesn't like feeling weak. “Exactly. I am the Alpha of Nightmares. What is a common thing of nightmares?” he asked, his tone taking on a sinister quality as he leaned closer, claws starting to dig into my skin. “They are dark and terrifying?” I arched an eyebrow doing my best to maintain my bravado. I would not whimper for him. He obviously gets off on that shit.

Chapter 20 A few hours later, closer to 4 pm now, with only a few more hours of day light, they headed back to the old town to do some checking. Amber’s hearing was so strong that she picked up the zombies in the area. “Down that street to the right of the old malt shop, there a 2 hanging out right around there. I don’t hear any of the others. In fact, I only hear them for miles.” “Impressive hearing.” Alex turns the coroner and sees the zombie pair down the street. As he approaches slowly, they look up and run. However, Amber is out of the car before even Dominic and is right on them in a flash. She recognized them as Henry’s parents.

The nightmares did not stop. Every night, the ghosts came. My mother, her face twisted into a mask of shadow, her voice accusing. Kaelen, his eyes black, his hands reaching for my throat, his fingers cold. Lorna, her white hair wild, her crown of thorns dripping blood that sizzled where it touched the floor. Marcus, laughing, always laughing, his black eyes watching me from the corners of my dreams, his voice whispering that I would never be free.

I stared down at the blood on her body, at the blood on mine, and the man lying lifeless on the bed, soaked in his own blood. I killed him. With a shaky breath, I turned to find Mason’s mother standing in the hallway. A gun in her hands. Her face was filled with pure hatred for me. Her eyes were dark, lips curled. “Die, bi—” Sometimes, dreams can be misleading, like this one. Suddenly, everything began to shift. Then it got hot, and then I jerked up. . . *cough* I didn’t know how long I had been asleep, but the moment I opened my eyes, I felt it.

“Son of a bitch, “Dannie said in a sigh. She rested her forearms on her knees. With a slow, deep breath she waited until her heart finally caught on to the fact there was no danger. It was only a nightmare. Another fucking nightmare. As long as Dannie could remember, she had them. On a typical week, Dannie would suffer three to five nightmares. They were all similar in theme: death, mayhem, and suffering— all the good stuff. Though, she never actually had a nightmare with the deabru before. Usually, her nightmares were vague concepts and seemingly symbolic. The only time Dannie stopped having nightmares was when she was away from home. It was the negative energy thrown at her in this place,

Within seconds, my eyes grow heavy and sleep takes over, pulling me into a whirlwind of nightmares throughout the night. I'm falling through a dark hole and I desperately try to cling onto the sides to pull myself back up. Screams echo around me and I slap my hands over my ears, wanting to block the noise out but it only intensifies it. My fathers voice pleads for help. Trevor's voice is loud and vicious. My mother's voice is extremely high pitched, calling my name over and over again.
