The next second, a white flash nuked my vision and forced my eyes shut. When I opened them again, my living room had straight-up rage quit and turned into a blood-red wasteland. "Okay, what the hell?" I squinted and spotted my six-foot-two husband, Adrian Chase, already doing the whole protective-dad thing with one arm around our son.

I had been hounded by nightmares, gnarled reflections of everything I feared most and everything that made me insecure. I had tossed and turned, my mind conjuring up dark scenarios where Alpha Blake turned his back on me, leaving me alone to face the unknown threats lurking around us. Shadows danced in my dreams, faces I couldn't quite recognize but felt an unsettling familiarity with. Nora's smirking visage haunted me the most, a constant reminder of the betrayal I felt brewing.

Several other people were coming in from different directions, also having chosen to walk. Sloan looped her arm through mine. Sara sidled up next to us. “This is sooo exciting guys! I’ve always wanted to come to one of these!” Abbey rolled her eyes at her roommate. “I don’t know why you’ve heard all the stories.” Sloan and I exchanged a glance. Abbey made no secret about the fact she hated fraternities and sororities alike. She hated all sorts of organized ‘clubs’ so to speak. Unless it was the damn Audubon Society. She didn’t care much for Garrett either, telling me on more than one occasion he was a pompous asshole.

"In fact, your timing is perfect." I remembered the last time Sarah had wanted to join the Circle of Nightshade. It had been in my previous life, back when we were still tight friends and I was unaware of how deep the jealousy ran. Back when I thought sororities were stupid and beneath me, and I'd tried talking her out of applying. But she did anyway, only to be rejected. She'd been disappointed but was happy that she had done it. How things had changed. The three sisters huddled together, whispering among themselves like they were planning something elaborate. I caught fragments of their conversation. Words like "perfect" and "opportunity" and "resolution." None of it sounded good.

“I will take care of Sia. You stay with him.” Coco nodded in agreement. “I will come to help.” “I’m fine,” Callum said, but Coco wasn’t having it. She ignored his words and dragged him with her to Leon and Sia’s place. Back at home, Sia lay in a restless sleep as her mind was trapped in a nightmare loop. She was haunted by visions of herself drenched in blood while losing babies over and over again. Every nightmare was a reminder of the pain she had endured and the trauma that still haunted her despite the years that had passed. It felt like she could never escape the horrors of her past.

Bad things happen on her birthdays and they were usually the dreams she had a night before, coming to reality. They were usually slight occurrences that didn't involve death but they were still bad. The worst thing about these nightmares was that it seemed there was nothing that could stop them from happening. They were bound to happen and Juana called it her curse. But her dad and granny thought it was fun or magic. Even if it was evil. "It'll let us know what to do and what not to do" Granny said but the evil still happened anyway no matter how careful they were in trying to prevent it.
