A spray of black, steaming blood hit the snow between us. Kaden let out a choked sound, dropping to the ground beside me. He didn't care about the army or the Council or the diamond anymore. He grabbed my shoulders, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at the black liquid. "This is soul-rot," Kaden breathed, his tactical mind immediately identifying the darkness. "Damon... that coward. He used a death-tether."

“You want me to stop? No! To you traitorous humans; I am your Daymare and your Nightmare. I am the Punishment of both God and Devil. If you all hadn't committed this great sin, I would not have brought this punishment unto you. I am... BLACK HEART”

I stutter. “Your blood.” I shake my head. “No.” “You are descending the stairs of denial again, Faye.” He sighs, throwing the blade into the table. My eyes are glued at the spot pulsing gently with black blood. It is the same I have seen with the vampires, and other creatures in Alkhemi—the dead. “No, i-it’s…” “It is black because you have died, and have been reborn through Sin,” he says. “Like every one of his creations.”

It forcibly used its soul power to attack the woman's soul body. "Ugh!" This immediately caused the woman to retreat, vomiting blood and causing her plan to kill herself to fail. "Hahaha, it's time!" said the sea of black souls excitedly, ready to devour the remaining half of the sea of black souls. "That won't happen! I will die with you. I won't let you destroy the world I was born into!" The woman firmly ignored her soul wounds and forced all her remaining soul to gather in one place, preparing to explode together with the black sea of souls.

I pressed my bloody hand to the steering wheel, leaving a crimson print. "I swear by my blood and my broken heart," I whispered to the darkness. "Evangeline Cross will pay for what she's stolen from me. Even if I have to sell my soul to make it happen." Lightning flashed across the sky, as if the universe itself had heard my vow. And in that moment of brightness, I could have sworn I saw something in the clouds, a pair of silver eyes, watching me with ancient amusement. The Soul Eater was waiting. And I was coming to make a deal.

The soul eater sits on the floor, covered in blood and something else that I don't recognize until I open the door further and step in. Looking down, I see a disemboweled baby torn to shreds. It's in so many pieces that I can't even tell for sure what it is, except for the baby bottle half buried in the blood and intestines. Suddenly, the smell hits me and I have to bend over as I lose my supper. Sandwich spraying everywhere, even on the soul eater. She looks up at me and smiles while holding an arm bone and then begins gnawing on it.

The Black Souls leader sat back, smile turned surly, bulging, muddy eyes showing even more white. "So you say." He gripped the carved arms of his throne with his girly hands, nails chewed to the quick. His pasty face went mottled a moment, patches of red flickering over his cheeks and down his throat. I felt the bubbling blackness of his sorcery emerge, press against mine. "And yet, despite your so-called power, you have as yet to defeat your enemy."

"You will disappear and will never go back so you don't dare die until you grow a soul and I can reincarnate you." We focused our attention on her as she held Gabriel and Raphael by the neck. They have no trace of wounds but you can see the weakness in them as if they have been fighting Syne for years. Is Syne really that powerful? "Wait, what?" Vanna said. "Vampires can grow a soul?"
