"They're not real, they're not…" But she could still hear them below, smelling her and waiting. From up here, the world stretched in every direction, ruined and glowing under the fractured sky. Fires burned in the distance and beyond the city, she could see where the land itself had cracked open, massive spaces glowing with crimson light and above it all… a tear. A rift, wide as the horizon. Something peaked through it, light or maybe darkness, she couldn't tell and the air shimmered where it touched, as if the laws of nature couldn't decide what they were anymore.

The rift was gone—sealed, for now. But in the distance, beneath the pale dawn sky, something shimmered—a new mark burned into the earth, faint but unmistakable. Another rift. And from its center came a single sound. A heartbeat.

The Rift They reached the rim just as the moon tipped into full eclipse, its light bleeding entirely crimson. Below them, the rift glowed in impossible colors—white-gold clashing against shadow-black, light and dark locked in a silent, furious dance. The seal—once a ring of standing stones bound by the oldest magic—was buckling, its runes flickering like dying embers. The gap at its heart yawned wider, spilling whispers into the air. The pack fanned out along the ridge, every gaze turning to Aria. She felt the weight of it all—hope and fear, trust and expectation—press into her bones.

1. The Rift Opens The rift pulsed like a second sun over the Western Reach. Ava stood at its edge, armored in midnight threads enchanted by Darius himself. Kael adjusted the shield rune on her spine, while Rowan watched the portal with narrowed eyes. “I don’t trust it,” Rowan said. “It’s not just a hole. It’s a trap.” Kael agreed. “It’s too stable. Rifts this size don’t hold unless something is holding them.”

The Rift and the sky split again and from far, far away, I heard howls. Real howls from outside. Finnick, kade. They were still waiting. They still believed I would come back. I fell to my knees, glowing, panting, broken but not defeated. Because now… the Rift itself was afraid of me. *********************** Finnick's pov A low, strange vibration hummed through the soil, rising up through my boots and rattling my bones. Kade stiffened beside me, his eyes locked on the Rift. “You feel that?” he muttered, blade already in his hand.

“That is precisely what he expects.” Eryx glanced between them. “Is… anyone else incredibly angry right now?” Seraphine nodded vigorously. “Very.” Rian’s voice cracked. “I’m somewhere between panic and vomiting.” Alessia spoke. “What is the location?” Lunaris projected a map of Noctis territory—the northern mountains carved with glowing lines. The Rift of Aetherfall. A deep, open scar in the land shaped like a spiral, surrounded by black stone cliffs and ancient ruins. Essence swirled above it like a constantly shifting storm.

I explained. If Della and I were to be mates and there were already issues with dreams so vivid and desperate, I'd be lying if I didn't feel the fear creeping into my throat. "I've heard of mates having synchronised dreams. It just doesn't happen often," Lilith said as she turned the page of a book she was reading.

I crane my neck back, move my hair back to see it all. The portly guard pulls a lever, and a portion of it lowers. Clunky and groaning, the ice flys out, the gate forcing its way open. I grab onto Dante and he helps me past the blocks of ice until we cross the other side of the gate.
