The air around us shimmered, almost like heat waves rising from the ground. Then it settled. The campaign disappeared. At least from physical eyes. The camp was still there, but it also… wasn’t. “What did she just do?” I asked quietly, masking the surprise. Ronan, standing beside me, glanced over. “Veil spell,” he said casually. “A what?” “It hides the camp,” Darius explained from my other side. “Anyone passing through won’t even know this place exists.” I looked back at the empty space. It was unsettling but amazing.

“Woah—“ Kieran smiled at my reaction. “This is a protection spell that will hide your scent and protect you from anything that could cause you harm on our realm. It doesn't last forever but it should suffice until we find Caelan.” “What happens if the spell wears off?” Kieran’s gaze narrowed, his gaze darkening. “Bad things…if you feel it wearing off come find me immediately.” I gulped. “How will I know?” I asked. “When it’s wearing off—how will I feel it?”

Uncle Zeb and Uncle Jeb touch my amulet, and something begins to move into my body. I am not burning or hurting as the magic from the amulet spills into my body.

“Even then, the spell might finish if enough blood has already been spilled.” I stared at him. “That’s impossible.” “Yes.” His smile was bitter. “I know.” I stood there, my mind racing through every strategy and watching each one collapse. “How do I stop a spell that might finish even after the caster is dead?” I asked. “You don’t.” Aldric reached into his robes and pulled out a small crystal that glowed with faint light. “But this might. It’s a disruptor. If you can get close enough to touch her while she’s casting, activate this. It should shatter the binding before it locks in.”

A new streak of white forms in her hair, and her skin loses color, becoming gray. “Oh god, stop!” I shout “You’ll die!” Devona doesn’t respond. Her chant grows harsher, more intense. She begins to gasp between words, the strands of light, her life force begins to waver as she drops to her knees. Holding my breath, I start to move forward, but her eyes warn me away.
