I scratched my arm as if this was all I’d wanted to do in the first place, but a dark mass far ahead, before which the shadow passed, twitched. It had looked like a rock, but it moved, two long limbs rose on either side like enormous spider legs, and pushed it up. Beneath it, there were legs. The limbs were abnormally long and skeletal. The arms that had helped it stand up nearly dragged the ground, and from the torso, rose a head. And its eyes looked straight at me. I closed my eyes instinctively. I did not want to be noticed.

Rolling over, I cringe with pain when I look at my abraided ankle, knees and hands. Swallowing hard, I look at the horrific sight before me. Spider-like creatures are crawling across the ceiling and surrounding me. It’s a horrific sight to see. The creatures look like large spiders, with spines on their backs, long taloned claws, and razor-sharp teeth. Their eyes are red, and saliva falls from their chelicerae as they gaze hungrily back at me. None dare to approach me. Instead, they pace around me, which is super confusing.

The boot ?” Raising her skirt, she extends the foot, turning it one way then the other as though surprised to find the polished black leather encasing a good part of her leg. “Your feet are much larger than mine, which makes it easier to kill the spiders and provides a little distance from them as I do so.” She glances up at me. “There are an almost amazing number in here. And they are remarkably large. And beastly ugly”. “Cardinal spiders, no doubt”. I tell her.
