After school started back, the excitement turned to the upcoming holiday that all kids and teenagers love, Halloween. The local theater was putting on their annual haunted house but we saw signs that they were short on actors. They had it open on Saturday nights and then on Friday nights that there wasn’t a home football game to compete with.

Pumpkins had started showing up around the ward. Not real ones, but plastic, hollow, and too bright, but still pumpkins. Someone had taped paper bats along the hallway bulletin board, and the cafeteria offered watery orange punch they called “spooky brew.” It was almost Halloween, and Naya couldn’t stop thinking about how, this time last year, she’d been at Adrian’s office party, dressed in black silk, drinking real champagne. Now she was in paper slippers, eating Jell-O that looked like blood but tasted like cherry cough syrup.

I only hope I don't have to be murdered in order for that to happen. Arlo drives me home and the moon follows us. I hate Halloween, what used to be costumes and fun. Is now fear, panic, and an asshole laughing in a Haunted House. Nothing is scarier than this Halloween. As Arlo squeezes my hand, I know I can face the demons and ghosts of tonight with him by my side. To make sure its not in my head, I squeeze his hand and he squeezes mine a little tighter bringing a little bit of happiness back with it.

I found his humor comforting and a bit of a relief from my anxiety. We visited a Halloween exhibition at the Botanica Gardens in the city center. Tenants were busy setting up their booths. They were filled with various spooky-themed products: candy stands, clothing stands, hat stands, accessories stands, uniquely flavored drinks stands, snacks stands, and even a tok figure stand. The spooky Halloween atmosphere was complemented by the warmth of the falling maple leaves. My eyes were spared by the orange and black, with no flashy colors. It would have been more striking at night because the lights installed behind the pumpkins' eyes and other ornaments would have dispelled the darkness.

Sade’s POV The crisp autumn air wrapped around Sade as she stepped out of her car, the scent of burning leaves and pumpkin spice filling the air.
