The old woman did not flinch. Not at Nia’s size, not at her scars, not at the gold eyes watching her from beneath a heavy brow. Maeve walked forward until only a few feet separated them. “You are Nia,” she said. Nia stared. Maeve pressed a hand to her own chest. “I am Maeve Rook. I knew your mother.” The garden went silent. Nia’s claws flexed once against the grass. “Mama,” she said. “Elowen,” Maeve answered. “Her name was Elowen Reed.”
