I wanted to let you know that Echoes of Ruin will be going on a short, temporary hiatus. The story will officially return on January 1st, and this pause is purely a reset, not a goodbye. This world, these characters, and the story still unfolding mean so much to me. Stepping back briefly helps me stay aligned with the pacing, emotional weight, and intensity this series deserves, especially as we move into the next stretch of the story, where everything begins to tighten, fracture, and collide. I want to make sure what comes next hits exactly the way it should.

They didn’t hurt, they just *held*, sinking into her skin until moving felt impossible. A shape hovered above her. Broad. Heavy. No face she could make out, just the press of something male and ancient that filled the dark like smoke. It didn’t ask. It reached. Fingers, long, impossible, neither warm nor entirely solid pushed straight through her ribs. No tearing, no blood. Just deep, blooming pressure as they closed around the bright, frantic pulse inside her chest. The Echo. It flared hard against the grip, like it knew exactly whose hands these were.

ARIA. The chime of my phone pulled my attention away from the book Cleo had given me about gifted werewolves and how to harness those gifts. It was positively fascinating. Plus, I loved adding additional fun facts to my knowledge bank. My eyes were heavy from reading, but the sound snapped me back into focus.

“Because I believed it could be better.” Ruth nodded. “Then make sure those words last longer than the mistakes did.” She wrote through sunrise. Then through mid-morning. Each chapter of the Doctrine took the shape of a life Echo had touched—sometimes uplifted, sometimes crushed. Lena named names. Told stories. Not just the victories. The failures. The silences. The betrayals. And then, she reached the most difficult section: The Fire Years. Stephanie. Calix. Rafael. Herself.

They gripped each other’s wrists, identical hands, trembling with strain. Not fear. Not hesitation. Just tension. Years of it. Lydia’s breath was sharp, ragged. Echo’s was smooth, almost serene. “You were made to survive,” Echo whispered, twisting her grip, lips close enough to taste Lydia’s breath. “But I was made to replace.” Lydia bared her teeth. “Then why haven’t you?” Echo’s smile was devastatingly calm. “Because I was waiting for you to become me.” A grunt escaped Lydia’s throat as Echo spun her, slamming her back into the steel exam table. Cold metal kissed her spine. But Lydia’s hand shot out—grabbing a shattered shard of mirror from the floor.

There was laughter echoing down dirt roads, Sunday dinners that stretched late into the night, and the kind of childhood that wrapped around you like a warm blanket. Before the pain, there was peace. Before the scars, there was innocence. This is where my story truly begins.

Vaelor asked, his voice shaking with a sudden, sharp anger that made the blue torches flicker. "It is the only way to ensure the Hunger does not return to the world, and it is the choice the first ones made to protect their kin," the Echo said, its form starting to dissolve back into sparks of light as the recording reached its end. "I didn't agree to be a prisoner in a swamp, and I didn't agree to take you down with me!" Vaelor shouted at the fading ghost, but the Echo only offered a final, mournful look before it vanished completely, leaving us in the dim light of the dying torches.

Midnight Neko and I softly stepped towards the entrance of the cave entrance – my second hide away spot that is now occupied by four special individuals. I hear the silent snores of them – poor things must be so tired from all that running. “Neko…fetch…” I whisper to my trusted friend , and he instantly agrees. He enters the cave , a place that I can not see in as their once burning fire is now dim and soon to go off. I hope he is able to retrieve her with out making a drama – and just as I thought it , I hear a loud growl.

The book rose slowly, chains rattling, each link carved with runes that had once been forbidden even among my kind. “If light shields the boy,” I murmured, “then we’ll teach the darkness to see through light.” The pages flipped open on their own, stopping at a spell so old even I had forgotten its shape. Echo Binding. It didn’t invade the mind. It didn’t curse the body. It whispered into the world around the target—turning every reflection, every ripple of water, every shard of glass into a listening ear. If I couldn’t walk inside their dreams, I’d make the world itself my spy.

The courtyard was overgrown with weeds, and the stone pathway was covered in a thick layer of moss. Next door, where my childhood home had once been, was now a bar. From inside, a singer strummed their guitar, their voice drifting through the evening air: "…At the moments that matter most, I finally see it clear, “Your hesitation, “Leaving me to wander alone, “Sober in the midst of dying, “Realizing you were always two steps ahead of me…" My fingers tightened around the keys. The sharp edges dug into my palm, cutting deep.
