Chapter 1: Fractured Homecoming Elias Kane stepped through the front door just after midnight, duffel bag thudding softly against the frame. The house felt too still. “Mara?” he called quietly but no answer. He moved into the kitchen, flipping on the light. His eyes landed on the steel watch sitting on the counter. A man's watch that's clearly not his own. “What the hell…” A car door slammed outside. Elias flinched hard, back hitting the wall as memories surged—explosions, shouting, dust choking his lungs. “Not now,” he muttered through clenched teeth. “Breathe, damn it.”

A wave of pure, unadulterated hatred surged through me, nearly snapping my composure. Silas’s lips moved, cold and dismissive. "Get out". My fingers tightened around the strap of my bag as the crushing desperation of my past life flashed before my eyes. However, before I could react, a voice exploded inside my head. [Whoa! She’s gorgeous! Is that look on her face... Is she already head-over-heels for me? No, no, Silas, stay composed. You can't let her think you're an easy catch. Right, keep it up. Stay cold. Make her want to chase you!]

The chamber trembled. The synchronization surged. And slowly, for the first time in recorded history, the Echo revealed itself. The manifestation that emerged from the convergence currents did not resemble a monster. It did not resemble a god. It did not resemble an ancient force of destruction. Instead it resembled a person. Or rather, something that had once tried very hard to understand people.

Dash could not stop crying when he heard my harsh words. "Uncle Howard! I want Uncle Howard. I don't want Daddy! He's scary. Mom, let's go." For the first time, Gemma, who always seemed to trust her judgement, sensed something was wrong. She grabbed Dash over and asked, "What happened?" No matter how composed he usually was, he was still just a child. He cried uncontrollably. "Uncle Howard is a good man. I don't want Daddy. I want Uncle Howard." The child I had raised for three years ended up betraying me.

The Echo The room shook. Ava walked toward the altar, her mark flaring white-hot. The Echo descended like a wraith, touching the floor with bare feet. “You think you’re stronger than me,” she said. “But you created me.” Ava stopped just feet away. “I did. But I’m done feeding you.” The Echo smiled cruelly. “Are you? Then let’s see.” She reached forward—faster than thought—and slammed her palm into Ava’s chest. Pain lanced through Ava’s body. The mark flared wildly.

I laid her gently on the patch of moss in the center and stepped back. Then I raised my voice. “I know you’re there!” I shouted into the trees. “I know you hear me! I don’t know what to do!” No answer. “Come on,” I said, stepping in a slow circle. “She’s not waking up. She touched the book and now she won’t wake up. You told me not to mess with things I didn’t understand—well guess what? I did. And now she’s gone somewhere I can’t reach. Please.”

She stops by the car and I reach just behind her— barely a foot away. Time freezes for me as she turns to me and our eyes meet. Recognition ignites with my gaze and my mind, mingling with a rush of shock. It's her. It's Echo. Although I had barely seen her years ago, I can't make the mistake of recognizing her. She's the same woman, but yet so different that it makes my voice lost and frozen within my soul. Her green eyes once filled with a hint of vulnerability, now blaze with undeniable strength. The helplessness she once had in those orbs has subsided into a powerful ambience. She radiates the aura, confidence, and heat of something unknown.

yhe window as I looked past the road contained by various people and cars. I know, I know, this chapter is whack. I think I'm going to take a break from Echoes because I'm really having a block. I don't know when next I would update but please bear with me. I don't want to write due to pressure so as not to ruin the book for you and I. Also, there is something important here so don't think too much of the boring chapter. It happens 😂😂

Siren POV “Our parents weren’t the best,” Echo begins, voice low and measured, as though every word is a landmine he has to step around. “They took a lot of drugs. I was abandoned, literally left in an alley when I was three. I spent the rest of my childhood in care.” “Echo, just tell me,” I interrupt, exhaustion and anger bleeding into every syllable. “I am telling you,” he answers, eyes still locked on the floor. “But I need you to hear everything first.”

The void beneath me pulsed with quiet energy, almost breathing. I stepped forward cautiously, my bare feet brushing the strange, soft ground. It was endless — no walls, no sky, no ceiling — yet it didn’t feel empty. It felt alive. “Where… where do I even start?” I whispered, spinning in a slow circle. My mind raced, imagining the coming apocalypse, the hordes I knew were waiting just days away. “You start where all things start,” Echo said, materializing a little closer. Its form shimmered like liquid smoke. “Not with weapons, not with shields… but with understanding.”
