She hadn't expected the authorities to collect books from survivors, sort them, then offer them for trade again. With one disaster after another making even three meals a day uncertain, books were little more than firewood to the poorest survivors. Nobody would waste precious credits or supplies on them, so hardly any of them had sold. That worked out perfectly for Nicole. There were books on physics, math, chemistry, technology, biology, and all kinds of academic subjects, along with relationship magazines, novels in every genre, and even paintings. They were cheap, too. Nicole kept checking boxes and circling items with her pen. Once the apartments were sold, all of it would be hers.

When I came back to my senses, Elijah’s expression had turned ugly. He glanced at Thea with disappointment before pulling out my blood donation report as proof. “Take a good look at who actually saved your life.” Thea’s body jolted the moment she saw the name ‘Sadie Stevens’ printed in bold on the report, and her fingers clenched so tightly that they turned pale. “How is this possible… It was Sadie… So that means I was deceived? I almost killed my own savior?”

He has a large smile on his face. Elizabeth chuckles then she comments on David’s personality. “You took in Bob and sheltered him. You even took the time to teach him how to communicate with you. I’m surprised that you can think so ruthlessly.” David remembers saving Bob but he also knows that if he wasn’t ruthless, he would have been dead. ~It was how I survived.~ “Come again?” ~I survived because I was ruthless.~ Elizabeth finishes covering David’s wounds with the herbs. “Well… keep being ruthless… what was it? Be as sharp as a sword but be as light as a feather??”

12 Liora's POV “You can open the rest of the buttons if you want. Oh heavens. Who does he even think he is? He's not the least bit attractive. He's just... umm... argghh!” I groan, dumping my book away. It falls to the ground with a thud, and I run to pick it up, making sure I didn't tear my favorite storybook because of Evren. When I see no issue with it, a sigh of relief escapes my lips. “Oh, my baby. I'm glad you're okay.”

The house was quiet; the nanny had already finished and left, leaving just me and the children. Later that evening, after dinner, I sat with the kids in their room. I picked up one of their storybooks. “Storytime!” Caleb clapped his hands, bouncing on the bed. “Alright, let’s see what we have tonight…” I opened the book. The pages showed colorful drawings of a family of three camping outside under the stars. I cleared my throat and began to read:

He has to get to his child. We can push the door open far enough for me to slip into the opening. It is handy to be small sometimes. I enter the room, seeing the cause of the obstruction is a bookshelf. It must have tipped and lodged itself against the door during the earthquake. I tip the bookshelf back against the wall, letting Brixtius have access to the room. A room with furniture strewn all over the place. "Eurydice!" I yell out, hearing her cries from under a fallen dresser. Brixtius moves with speed and lifts the wooden furniture like it weighs nothing.

When the Program told me I could return, I felt no joy. Only emptiness. The next time I opened my eyes, I was staring at a white hospital ceiling. Machines beeped beside me, and my throat burned as if I had been asleep for years. A nurse saw me wake and rushed over. “You’re safe,” she said. “You were caught in a dockside explosion. Sophia Lane didn’t survive.” My fingers tightened against the sheet. Sophia was dead. Before I could speak, the nurse added, “There was another survivor. A young man named Luca. He woke up this morning.”

After all, you didn't have to hang up everything and that was nobody's business. When Eleanor turned to the next customer, Maddox slid to the side a little and then started on his own food. "Did you notice what was going on over in Florida?" Gian asked between bites. "You mean the thing with these animal rights activists, because of whom four people are now dead, but two cranes were able to escape the Venators?" Gian nodded. "But they weren't just any animal rights activists, the people were from Live for Animals." The piece of sausage caught in the air halfway to Maddox's mouth. "You are incinerating me."
