She turned onto her side, pulled the blanket over her chest, and whispered into the darkness:

Nova woke to the scent of clean linen and the muted hum of silence. Dusk had settled outside, casting lavender shadows across the bedroom ceiling. The nap hadn't been planned, but her body had folded under exhaustion the moment she touched the sheets. Now, her limbs felt heavy, warm, and too aware of the empty space beside her. She sat up slowly, the blanket slipping from her shoulder. The house was quiet, too quiet. Her pulse jumped. Damian was gone. She swung her legs off the bed and stood, tugging her robe tighter as she padded barefoot toward the hallway. Every so
