I swallowed hard, gripping the mug tighter. “I wasn’t brave. I was scared out of my mind.”

The words landed heavier than I expected. No one had ever said that to me before. Fear had always been ammunition for someone else, proof I was small, fragile, easy to control. But the way Blake said it—it sounded like a weapon I could use, not a weakness to hide.
I looked at him too long. Long enough that the air shifted between us, heavier, charged. His scar caught the dim light, his jaw tight, eyes still locked on mine.
