I'm even more confused about why I am crying right now. I wasn't expecting Sierra to embrace me, but I felt my hands slowly embracing her back. My own tears were about to spill over. "If you're sad… you have to cry!" Lily's voice trembled. "You can't hold it in all by yourself!" Silence. Then— "I'm here…" Her crying didn't stop. "I'll be with you…" "So… it's okay…" "You can cry…" Silence. Long. Very long. Then— A small voice. Broken. Like something finally cracking. I hold my breath. And then— Crying. Softly. At first. Sylvia smiled at them but it quickly waivered and her overflowing tears rolled over her face to fall onto the tar ground. Just the sight of her laughing daughter caused Sylvia more pain; her tears turning into heaving sobs. “I j-just wi-wish it didn’t ha-have to come to t-this” Sylvia babbled, as she watched Serenity run over to Red who was disappearing and reappearing for her amusement while he approached us.

I take a deep breath, pushing my pain and exhaustion aside, walk back out to Silas, and place the water on the nightstand as I sit on the edge of the bed. “I’m sorry,” I say, sniffling as I fight back tears.
