It was suffocating, this unspoken thing that hung in the air.
“Do you really mean that?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
I blinked, caught off guard. “Of course I do. Why would you doubt it?”
She looked up at me then, her eyes full of something I couldn’t quite name. “I don’t know, Adrian. Sometimes... sometimes it feels like we’re strangers.”
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. Strangers. Is that what we had become? After everything we’d been through, all the moments we’d shared, was that really how she saw me?
