Jax’s POV I was standing at my office window, sipping the worst coffee I’d had all week, when my phone buzzed three times in quick succession. I glanced down to look at it. “Camilla Devereux Rushed to ER After Stress-Related Pregnancy Complication. Says Jax Maddox’s Cruelty is to Blame.”

My back stings like there are needles stuck in it, my lower abdomen is on fire and my breathing is short. "I'll take you to the infirmary. If Xan can't heal you, it must be something severe". Jace is doing his best to stay calm, but I can feel his fear. I have never been seriously ill before, with my Alpha genes, I can withstand almost any illness. But what I feel now is beyond my own strength.

He had been craving them. Just a few minutes later, Jax felt a rumble in his stomach and decided to see a doctor. He couldn't afford to allow his reproductive tract to get faults. I ask worried. He shakes his head. I drop my voice to a whisper, “What are they fighting about.” He nods his head in the direction of his room so we can talk. “Jax is angry because he thinks Harper was being reckless when she could potentially be pregnant, the amount of alcohol you two drank last night would kill a mere human and a foetus.” He rubs his face, he looks tired but I don’t recall seeing him much last night aside from the actual event of my brothers shift.

Across the circle stood Jax. The cadet whose nose I had broken in training looked different. He was bigger. His muscles were swollen, veins pulsing like angry worms under his skin. His eyes weren't just red with the shift; they were bleeding black at the edges. He smelled of ozone and something sweet and chemical. Sickeningly sweet. Barzil-juice. Illegal combat stimulants. "You look small," Jax rumbled. His voice distorted by his elongated jaws. Wet sounds of saliva slapping against teeth. He dragged his claws through the sand. Scritch. "Easy to break."

His grip on Jax’s jersey tightened, fingers digging in like he needed the anchor. Then the pain hit. It bloomed in Jax’s core, deep and cramping, radiating outward until his limbs burned. His knees buckled. He caught himself on the boards, breath tearing in and out of his chest. Sweat poured down his face, soaking his underlayer. His scent glands fuck. They throbbed, swollen and hot, leaking something they had no right to be leaking. No. No way. He was twenty-eight. Three months past his birthday. Betas didn’t present late everyone knew that. He’d taken every test, every blood draw since he was fourteen. Beta. Clean. Ordinary. Safe.
