Tainted Whispers
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
He snapped it open. Inside lay a light, intricate chain. It was a thin platinum chain holding a small circular pendant: the Volkov family crest, a silver wolf wreathed in thorns, its eyes set with tiny, blood-red rubies.
"This belonged to my mother," Victor lied easily. It had belonged to the Volkov matriarchs for generations, a symbol of belonging and, more importantly, protection. "In this house, those who wear the crest are untouchable. If you wear this, my men will know you are under my personal shadow. They will not question your presence."
